Whenever I host friends and family, I love creating recipes like these jalapeño popper egg rolls. They’re a great option as a starter since they’re so flavorful. These jalapeño popper wontons are also super easy to make and only require 15-20 minutes (including prep time!). Bonus – you’ll need minimal kitchen tools/appliances (just an air fryer!), so clean up is quick and easy.

I like my jalapeño popper spring rolls on the spicy side, so I include a small amount of hot sauce in the filling. However, if you’re sensitive to heat, leave the hot sauce out for a more manageable spice level.

This stuffed jalapeño popper recipe pairs well with other air fryer entrees, like Crispy Air Fryer Cornflake Chicken, Crispy Air Fryer Buffalo Chicken Tacos, and Orange Chicken (Air Fryer). Cleanup will be a breeze by keeping your cooking confined to the air fryer.

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • Spicy – This recipe’s jalapeños and hot sauce help create a deliciously fiery flavor.
  • Flavorful – Adding smoked paprika, garlic powder, and onion powder ensures each bite is packed with flavor.
  • Cheesy – Cream cheese and sharp cheddar help create a gooey, delightful filling for these egg rolls.
  • Crispy – Using the air fryer (or deep fryer) helps create a crunchy, golden brown exterior on these egg rolls.
  • Easy – The ingredients for this recipe are easy to find, and this dish only has a handful of steps.
  • Great for get-togethers – These crispy jalapeño popper egg rolls are the perfect appetizer for gatherings since they’re easy to grab.

Ingredients & Substitutions

  • Cheddar Cheese: If you prefer pairing a different cheese (like mozzarella) with your jalapeño popper egg rolls, you can use that instead. Any cheese will work for this recipe.
  • Jalapeños: You can make these egg rolls less spicy using a smaller amount of jalapeños. Reduce the jalapeños to 1/3 cup for a less fiery taste.
  • Egg Roll Wrappers: Any type of egg roll wrapper will work for this recipe. Ensure you thaw them before use so they are at room temperature. Let them thaw in the fridge for at least a few hours. Once thawed, ensure you use the wrappers immediately.

Ensure you tightly seal the egg rolls to avoid filling leakage.

Step 1: In a large bowl, combine the jalapeños, cream cheese, cheddar cheese, bacon, green onions, hot sauce, garlic, onion powder, and smoked paprika. Use a fork if needed to mash everything together so it is well combined.

Step 2: Fill a small ramekin or cup with some water. Place one of the egg roll wrappers on a clean plate or surface with one of the corners facing you. Add 2-3 Tablespoons of the filling to the bottom half of the wrapper. See photos above.

Step 3: Using your finger, moisten the bottom left and right edges. See photos above.

Step 4: Begin rolling the wrapper away from you until it is halfway rolled. See photos above.

Do not overcrowd the basket or pan with egg rolls.

Step 5: Wet the top left and right edges. Fold the corners toward the center. See photos above.

Step 6: Continue rolling until it is tightly sealed. See photos above. Repeat with the remaining wrappers and filling.

Step 7: Place about 4-6 egg rolls into the air fryer basket. Spray generously with spray oil. (Alternatively, heat a heavy-bottomed pot with 3-4 inches of peanut oil to 375 degrees. Fry the egg rolls for 3-4 minutes in batches. Do not overcrowd the pot.)

Step 8: Air fry at 360 degrees for 7-10 minutes, flipping after 5-6 minutes and spraying again with oil. If the egg rolls are not golden after 10 minutes, continue air frying and spraying with oil until they are brown.

Recipe Serving Suggestions

Garnish with fresh parsley, a sprinkle of shredded cheese, and an extra dash of hot sauce (if you and your guests enjoy spicier recipes).

I love serving these jalapeño popper egg rolls with ranch as a dipping sauce to help cool the heat. This jalapeño popper rolls recipe works well with other game night dishes. Here are a few ideas:

Expert Tips

  • Don’t overcrowd the deep fryer/air fryer. Overcrowding the air fryer basket or the deep fryer means the egg rolls will cook unevenly. Adding too many jalapeño popper egg rolls to the air fryer or vegetable oil simultaneously can lead to non-crispy rolls.
  • Use gloves to chop the jalapeños. Getting jalapeño juice in your eyes or any cuts on your hands while cooking can lead to a burning sensation. Avoid this issue by wearing gloves anytime you’re handling the jalapeños.
  • Moisten the egg roll wrappers. You’ll need water to seal the egg rolls so they don’t open while cooking. Only use water on the edges that you want to stick together. Avoid too much water, which can make the wrappers sticky and gummy.

Additions & Variations

  • Spicy – You can adjust the heat a few ways for these jalapeño popper egg rolls. The easiest method is to add less or more hot sauce (depending on your preference). If that’s still too spicy, consider using a smaller amount of jalapeño pieces.
  • More Cheese – Create a cheesier filling by adding other types of cheese, such as provolone, Colby, and Havarti.
  • Leftovers – Keep the leftover egg rolls in the fridge for up to three days in an airtight container. You can also freeze them for 2-3 months.

Recipe FAQs

What are jalapeño popper egg rolls?

Jalapeño popper egg rolls use the same ingredients as jalapeno poppers, except these ingredients are folded into egg roll wrappers. This wrapper helps create a crispy exterior and a creamy, spicy interior for the jalapeno popper egg rolls.

Why are my egg rolls tough?

If your egg rolls are tough, you likely left the wrappers out too long or let them dry out. Dried egg roll wrappers lead to tough, chewy, hard-to-eat jalapeño popper rolls.

What do you seal egg rolls with?

The simplest way to seal egg rolls is with water. You can also use an egg wash.
